The Club Championships June 19th 2022
In 1998, Alan and Andrea Pullin saw their dream realised. The opening of the Pavilion & Avenue Tennis Club on the Droveway. And it is entirely through their efforts that the club is what it is today. Voted Club of the Year in the whole of Sussex in 2021, boasting a membership of 550 individuals with a waiting list in excess of 200, successful teams, a vibrant junior programme and a rocking social scene – what more could the Club achieve? Ah yes – a successful Club Championship year on year. And the success of this year was once again down to Julie Hobbs (nee Pullin and I will be coming back to this dynasty later) and Adam Webb. In total 164 players took part over a span of 28 different categories ranging from Veterans to 9 and under. 
The fact that the tournament ran as smooth as a Roger Federer backhand over the 5 week period was down to the calm control of Julie and Adam.
The Finals day itself was also a miracle of expert scheduling and juggling players onto the right courts with black clouds looming threatening to spoil the day. Herding cats looked simpler under these pressures. What could possibly go wrong?? Actually nothing. And what a day for the young people. Teenagers Jayden and Mia Hobbs won the Men’s and Ladies’s titles beating strong opponents. The Pollard boys overwhelmed their opposition. It was Mia again helping Kate to pick up the Ladies Doubles title. And maybe the best tennis on the day was played at the 18 and under multimix final where Henry and Lola beat Ivan and Ronan. But it was Ivan’s day on the Singles court where he won both the 14 and 18 and under tournaments. Harrison Clowe also had a successful tournament winning both the 12 and under singles and the 14 and under doubles with Rhys. 
At the more mature end of the scale Jon Potter and Steve Davies proved what expert doubles specialist they are with Jon winning 3 trophies and Steve 2. And also Gill picked up her usual mixed dubbs title.
The clubhouse was packed all day with orders of hot dogs, Pimms, lagers, posh coffees and cake flying out. Special thanks to Tracey, Nicky, Josephine and Mr and Mrs Crayford.
It was not just a great day for Pavilion & Avenue but it was also a wonderful day for Alan and Andrea Pullin. At the end they were able to stand up in front of all with their daughter and grandchildren knowing that they had not just produced a highly successful tennis family but a wonderful club as well.
This was a day for young people. But most especially it was a day for the two people who started it all. Alan and Andrea.
