Our own Sonay Kartal wins her first WTA title just two months after reaching the third round at Wimbledon

So dreams do come true after all.

When Sonay Kartal first started playing tennis at Pavilion & Avenue at the age of 6 after watching her older brother play, not even her gutsy self could possible believe that 16 years later she would be lifting her first ever WTA trophy at the Jasmin open in Tunisia. And this after reaching the third round at Wimbledon only losing to the World Number 2 Coco Gauff  on  Number 1 court.

As a result of this success Sonay has now achieved her highest ranking reaching  the top 100 in the World.

During her journey, Sonay has been guided by Pav & Ave’s Coaching Team and supported by many Club members. Over the years, she has been coached by Julie Hobbs and Martin and Ben Reeves. It is Ben who is now her main coach accompanying her to all her tournaments.

What further success Sonay can achieve will be down to her improved fitness and inner belief that she now knows she can compete mentally and physically with all the top players.

With the Billie Jean King cup finals two months away, Sonay is on the fringes of the squad challenging Katie Boulter and her friend Emma Raducanu.

Its an astonishing rise in one of the toughest of sports and the question we all ask here at Pavilion & Avenue is what other young stars are there at the club who will achieve the same success as Sonay.
