Sonay wins her first ITF 18 & U International Title at Nottingham

Our Club’s junior girls enjoyed one of their most successful weeks when 3 of our home grown players, Sonay, Tiana and Alicia, who’ve all grown up playing at the Club and first started competing at mini red ball 8&Under, travelled up to Nottingham (with Martin the first week and then Ben the second week), to compete in two 18&U International ITF tournaments playing against some of the top juniors in the world.

The girls all had tough opening or second round singles opponents at the first tournament and Tiana and Sonay went on to reach the final in the doubles which helped boost their confidence. At the second tournament, Tiana and Alicia both had good wins in their first round matches before coming up against higher ranked opponents in the next round.

Sonay had a fantastic week and a great comeback to the game after being out injured, winning 6 matches in a row beating players world ranked in the top 300 in the quarter finals and semi finals before battling hard to beat a fellow Brit ranked 190 in the world 6-3 5-7 6-4 in the final.

Sonay and Tiana also made it to the semi finals of the doubles so a fantastic week for all the girls and Sonay has now travelled to Turkey to play in more ITF tournaments where she is hoping to pick up ranking points to help towards achieving her goal of improving her world ranking from 438 to around 250 which might give her a chance to compete in Junior Wimbledon this year which would be her dream come true!
